Why would your system need a Powerflush?

Many central heating system may be suffering from a build up of scale, rust or sludge. Power Flushing can restore and upgrade your system to as good as new.

A build up of scale, rust and sludge will significantly reduce the efficiency of your central heating system and you will be paying more to run a system that is not warming your home to the best of its ability.

GOPLUMBING.CO.UK power flushing team will provide power flushed methodically and thoroughly, pipe by pipe, radiator by radiator, including the boiler. Once your whole system has been power flushed thoroughly, safe plumber engineer will refill it with clean water, and a corrosive inhibitor will be added to your central heating system. This will be clearly labelled as containing this chemical substance. Power flushing usually takes from 4 hours to a day to complete, it all depends on the size, number of radiators and the type of system you have.

What does Power Flushing do?

The success of a power flush will depend on the level of heating system corrosion which has occurred beforehand. The process will cure most circulation problems.

You should really request power flushing when:

can see cold spots on radiator

blocked radiator

radaitor frequently needing venting or bleeding

radiators slow to heat up

Noise from boiler

poor or not hot water

boiler failure

heating circulation problems

blocked inoperative or leaking radiator valves

A central heating system may need to be drained down to carry out a repair or maintenance work or to make a modification to the system such as fitting a new radiator. This guide explains how to drain down and refill a sealed or unvented central heating system.

Draining Down a Sealed Central Heating System

On a sealed system, as the name implies, there is no new water being added to the system on demand. Water is only added when necessary. Turn off the boiler, disconnect it from the power supply, and allow the water in the system to cool. Not only will this safeguard against scalding yourself but the pressure in the system will be reduced. When you open the drain point the water flow will be less powerful making it easier to manage.

Locate the drain point on the heating system. This will usually be at the lowest point of the system and will frequently be on the pipe work next to the lowest radiator in the house. Attach a length of hose to this drain valve and secure using a jubilee clip. Tightening the jubilee clip over the hose where it connects to the drain valve will prevent it coming loose. As a precaution, place a suitable container under the connection in case there is a small amount of leakage. Run the other end of the hose to a suitable drain off point outside. The hose should obviously run downhill to allow the water to flow.

Ensure that the valves are open on all your radiators so that all pipe work will be drained. Open the drain valve by turning the square head with a spanner or small wrench. If it’s tight, hold the body of the valve with a second wrench to prevent it twisting while being opened. Check that the water is flowing to the drain outside. Open the air vent at the top of the radiators to allow air in to replace the water. This will speed up the process.

Once the water has stopped flowing, the heating system will be empty and you can now carry out whatever repairs or maintenance work is required.

Ensure that all air bleed valves are closed on the radiators. Close the drain valve, undo the jubilee clip securing the hose to the drain valve and remove the hose. Hold the hose end up so that any residual water in it will drain to outside. Take the hose outside to coil it back up before storing away.

Open the filling loop by the boiler to allow water to fill up the system and continue filling until the pressure on the gauge reaches the level recommended in the instruction manual. This is usually around 1 bar.

Go round the radiators, one by one, opening the bleed valve and releasing any air. Do the downstairs radiators first and then the upstairs ones. This will minimise the chance of trapping air in the system.

Once you have released all air from the system go back and top up the system again using the filling loop by the boiler. If you have been carrying out repairs or alterations, double check your work to make sure there are no leaks.

Turn the boiler back on following the instructions in the manufacturer’s manual, and allow the heating to run normally.

You’ll need to go round bleeding the air bleed valves again as the system heats up, and may need to do this a few times over the next day or two as the air from the water is driven out. Check the pressure gauge each time and top up as necessary.

Finally, once the system is up to temperature, inspect for leaks again. This is very important as a connection which is watertight when cold may expand and leak when warm.

To ensure an even distribution of the hot water to the radiators in a system you’ll need to do what’s known as balancing the system. Because the water is pumped via a pipe, and branches to feed each radiator, the ones at the beginning of the ‘run’ tend to get more than their fair share.

Balancing radiators is achieved by using the lockshield valve on each to regulate the flow of water to the radiator. By partial closing of these valves the radiators nearest the pump can be restricted more than those further away.

The best way to get this right is by using radiator thermometers, which can simply be clipped to the flow and return pipe at either end, and measuring the difference. You won’t often see a plumber balancing radiators using these though – experience enables them to adjust the valves without measuring the temperature.

Remember, the pipe to each radiator is a branch from the main flow pipe. Near the furthest radiator, the main flow pipe turns back towards the boiler and becomes the return pipe. The pipefrom each radiator then feeds back into this.

The water does not go into the first radiator then out and on to the next etc. It actually flows from one main pipe feeding all of them, and then flows back out into the return coming back from all of them.

When balancing radiators you will need to turn the heating off well in advance, so that the water has a chance to cool right down. Each radiator has a control valve – the one you use to turn it on or off, and a lock-shield valve – the one with a cover which you don’t normally turn. To open or close this lockshield valve, you need to remove the cover and use a pair of pliers. Open both valves on all the radiators.

Now, turn the heating back on and go to the first radiator. You are going to adjust them in the order in which they are served, so if you don’t know this, make a note of the order in which they heat up.

Fit the radiator thermometers to the flow and return. Turn off the lockshield valve then open it gradually again until the difference between the two thermometers is about 20 degrees Farenheight.

Move on to the second radiator on the system and do the same. If you repeat this for all of them in order, you should have a perfectly balanced system so that all radiators heat up efficiently. You may find the last one will need the lockshield valve fully open.
